Toilet Training Your Puppy Dog

Young puppies have little control over their bladders and as a result may urinate or defecate in the house. It is important for puppy owners to exercise patience when toilet training a puppy and remember that puppies respond better to rewards than they do to punishment.

Yelling at a puppy when it has gone to the bathroom in the wrong place is not very effective. In fact it may even cause a puppy to associate going to the toilet with doing the wrong thing and become reluctant to go or to start hiding the evidence better. Using positive reinforcement, for example lavishing praise and treats on a puppy, will be more effective than punishment in all areas of dog training, and especially when it comes to puppy house training.

Generally puppies will need to go to the toilet after they have eaten or upon waking, so puppy owners should provide a place inside for their puppy to go to the bathroom, such as some newspapers on the laundry room floor, or disposable puppy pee pads - available at Walmart and most pet stores. Dogs prefer porous surfaces such as grass or decking rather than tiles or concrete so he or she should prefer the newspaper to the floor anyway. Puppy owners should ensure they keep their puppys food and water far away from the newspaper or in another room entirely. Puppy owners should leave the puppy in the room until the puppy has gone to the toilet.

Consistency is the key in house breaking your puppy, so using the same method until the puppy catches on is best. It is important for Puppy owners to remember to reward their puppy when it does do the right thing. If Puppy owners want their puppy to go to the toilet outside, they should gradually move the newspaper towards the back door until eventually they can move it outside.

While puppies usually need to go pee or poop when they wake up or shortly after they have eaten, they may also need to go when they are excited or after exercise. Puppy owners should learn to recognize signs that their puppy needs to go to the toilet and respond quickly. (So pay attention to your puppy!) They may notice the puppy become restless and begin to sniff the floor and possibly even move towards the door. Now is the time to let the puppy out or put him or her in the laundry room.

Puppy Housetraining Tips to Remember

  • Puppy owners should try to watch the puppy at all times. They will soon begin to recognize the signs that their puppy needs to go to the toilet and hopefully prevent some accidents.
  • Puppy owners must remember to reward the puppy for using the correct place, whether it is the newspaper or the backyard. Puppies respond best to rewards and praise.
  • Puppy owners should clean up accidents as soon as possible making sure to remove the smell. This will discourage the puppy from using the same spot again.
  • Puppy owners should try feeding their puppy at the same times each day. This will help Puppy owners to predict when their puppy will need to go. If the puppy eats late at night, he/she may need to go to the toilet before the morning.
  • The same is true of exercise. If Puppy owners walk their puppy late in the day or in the evening he/she is likely to drink more and need to urinate overnight.
  • It may be appropriate for the puppy to sleep in the laundry room overnight until he/she is toilet trained.

Puppy owners should begin their puppy toilet training regimen as soon as they bring their puppy home, however these techniques can be used on an older dog too. In cases where a once perfectly toilet trained dog begins soiling the house, veterinary advice should be sought to rule out medical or behavioral problems.
